The G5 percussor is a handheld device that applies directional stroking to body tissues. Application of the G5 by a properly trained professional can be useful in the treatment of sports injuries, work injuries, and auto accident injuries. When tissue is improperly stressed or damaged in any of these injury types, a G5 percussor can be a useful modality to promote proper healing. The percussor allows the operator to perform massage parallel to muscle fiber direction and perpendicular. This device is less taxing on the person using it but still provides similar effects of hand-massage.
The purpose of the percussor is to reduce muscle spasm, decrease pain, improve normal range of motion, promote blood flow to injured areas and to aid in lymphatic drainage. The vibration added to the tissue increases the temperature and this helps improve muscle elasticity and stretching. The G5 percussor can be a useful means to apply transverse friction to a muscle group. Transverse friction massage is thought to help proper alignment of collagen fibers through the healing process.
Caution should be exercised when using this device over an area of hemorrhage. Patients that are sensitive to vibration stimuli should not have the percussor used on them.
If you have been injured in a motor vehicle collision, sports injury or work accident, your chiropractor may elect to use this type of treatment to promote proper healing.
